A Message from the UNW President, RE: NWT Wildfires

Aug 14, 2023

Watching the fire situation in the NWT unfold over the past few days has been absolutely devastating. I’ve been hearing directly from residents who have been evacuated, asking what can be done and where to go for help.

As UNW President, I want to assure our members that we are ready to work with employers to minimize the impacts of evacuations on workers. As a Northerner, my heart goes out to those affected and my thoughts are with you during this incredibly difficult time.

I want to remind all residents to follow all orders from municipal and territorial authorities. Keeping people safe is everyone’s priority right now, and failing to follow official instructions puts you, and others, at risk.

For those who want to help, there are a number of things you can do.

If you are able, cash donations to the United Way NWT’s Emergency Response Fund are an excellent way to make sure resources make it to those directly affected. The United Way works with local organizations to quickly deliver aid directly to those in need and has an established process for distributing funds quickly.

Some employers will grant leave for employees to assist in emergency operations. Check with your supervisor to see if this applies to you. If you've taken fire training in the last 2 years, please contact your Environment and Climate Change Regional Office with your name and a list of any relevant training and qualifications.

If you can donate time, space, or funds to local animal shelters, please contact the NWT SPCA. From fostering displaced pets to helping purchase food and supplies, every bit helps.

I also want to recognize and thank all our members on the frontlines. UNW members are present in all sectors at the territorial level and in several NWT municipal governments. Whether you are coordinating or receiving evacuees, part of the fire response teams, or keeping things together behind the scenes, we see you, we appreciate you, and we thank you for the work you do to keep residents safe.

In Solidarity,

Gayla Thunstrom,
UNW President
