Assistant Director – Legal Services & Membership Services

Indeterminate: Yellowknife NT

Duties: Reporting to the Director of Membership Services the incumbent provides representation for members in assigned areas by providing expertise and advice, researching, investigating and processing grievances, including attending grievance hearings with employers, researching precedents, interviewing potential witnesses, and preparing and presenting case summaries for referral to arbitration; representing the UNW and/or members before various boards and arbitrators; providing advice and guidance and assistance in the preparation and presentation of grievances; analyzing cases unresolved at the final level to prepare for arbitration; negotiating grievance settlements; reviewing arbitration decisions; writing legal opinions; acts as negotiator and advisor for UNW on Employer matters including: acting as negotiation and advisor in USW collective bargaining; provides advice on internal labour relations matters; represents UNW in arbitrations, mediations and other dispute resolution processes.

Qualifications: Law Degree from College or University and has been called to the bar and maintains good standing, 3 years labour relations experience; or 10 years related experience and/or training in the field of labor relations including negotiations, grievances, mediation, arbitrations and alternate dispute resolution forums; Or equivalent combination of education and experience. Mature judgment with a strong background of experience in advocacy, leadership, research, and negotiations; strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal diplomatically and persuasively with Employers and Union members; willingness to work irregular hours and travel throughout the Northwest Territories; requires computer skills (Microsoft Office, email, databases and spreadsheets). A criminal records check may be required.

Salary Range: $148,980.00 - $177,957.00

Membership Secretary/Data Analyst

Term, up to one year: Yellowknife NT

Duties: Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration the incumbent provides support to the Organization by updating and maintaining the Union membership database. Keeping records current in the electronic database, reviewing reports, analysing data and developing comprehensive reports, producing membership cards, producing membership information lists, studying database manuals, producing grievance reports and generating additional reports as required.

The incumbent also provides back up reception and general administrative support services including clerical, typing, photocopying, correspondence and proofreading material and documents.

Qualifications: Grade 12 with two years experience in an office/administration setting. The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills, an ability to work independently, good keyboarding skills, and a demonstrated ability to use standard computer software (database software and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook).

Salary Range: $69,994.70 - $78,999.62
