When disaster strikes - both at home and abroad - union members take action.
Many northerners are personally affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa - worried about their family, friends, and home communities.
The UNW is pleased to announce that the PSAC Social Justice Fund (SJF) has passed a motion to donate $20,000 to emergency relief for regions and communities impacted by Hurricane Melissa:
- $10,000 For Jamaica and other Caribbean nations as needed via Canadian Red Cross
- $10,000 to the Canadian Network on Cuba.
If you would like to contribute directly to disaster relief on the ground, the United Way International is also collecting donations to fund local organizations providing support and services in affected areas.
The UNW and SJF have a longstanding partnership with the United Way for distributing funds to assist residents affected by natural disasters both here in the NWT, across Canada, and beyond.
Many UNW members in the Northwest Territories contribute to the United Way NWT through payroll donations, and several NWT employers - including the GNWT - provide further funds to the SJF through negotiated contributions.
