The roots of labour’s support for the United Way reach back to the early 1900s as part of the Good and Welfare tradition – caring for those in need.
Over the years, our work together has supported workers and families in many communities devastated by unemployment and poverty, particularly during crises like the Great Depression. Through its project funding, United Way NWT is a growing contributor to project that address the root causes of social inequity.
The Union of Northern Workers is a board member and key participant in United Way NWT. It’s the workers who reach into their pockets to contribute to the work of the United Way.
What is the United Way?
The United Way provides communities with a way to join together to give everyone a chance for a better life. Positive change in the lives of people and communities is supported by raising funds and investing them in important community projects in three focus areas:
- Healthy people, strong communities
- Kids: All that they can be
- From poverty to possibility.
United Way NWT is also a vehicle through which people can donate to other registered charities in the NWT or other parts of Canada. During the 2014 fall fundraising campaign, United Way received donations and pledges in excess of $100,000, primarily from people in the NWT. In 2015, $91,500 was allocated to 21 projects across the NWT. For more information on the list of recipients for 2014, please see the United Way NWT website.
What organizations can I contribute to through the United Way?
Donors may donate to a registered Canadian charity. For an updated list of registered Canadian charities (which is necessary to be a recipient of funding through the United Way), please check the Canada Revenue Agency website: www.cra-arc.gc.ca/chrts-gvng/lstngs/menu-eng.html. Your donation is forwarded to your chosen charity less a one-time processing fee of $12.50. Any contributions not specifically allocated to a charitable organization are provided by the United Way of the NWT to charitable organizations in the NWT which apply for funding and whose mandates align with the United Way’s mandate.
NWT EMPLOYEE DONATIONS - Automatic Payroll Deductions
United Way The GNWT offers employees the opportunity to arrange for an automatic payroll deduction for charitable donations and to support the activities of the United Way of the Northwest Territories (NWT). Click here for the United Way Donations form.
Why should I consider payroll deductions?
Payroll deductions are an easy way for GNWT employees to contribute dollars to local charities through planned giving of a set amount per paycheque. Your contributions will make a positive difference in your community and your territory through planned deductions from each paycheque. From an administrative point of view, your receipt for charitable donations at tax time is easily available as it is clearly included on your T-4 from the GNWT.
What do I do if I want to contribute?
To obtain a payroll deduction form, download the United Way Donations form from the Human Resources website. Fill out the form and provide it to the DHR’s Payroll Department in Yellowknife (scanned copies are fine). Payroll will provide your donation to the United Way and the United Way will redirect your donation to your chosen charity. The amount of your donation will be recorded on your T4 slip for tax purposes. For employees who already contribute to the United Way, your deductions will continue from one campaign to the next. You do not have to complete a new form unless you would like to change your contribution amount and or the charity that you are contributing to.
What’s the deadline? The GNWT Fall Campaign for United Way is October 17 – November 21, 2014. The deadline to sign up for payroll deductions to support United Way NWT is November 21, 2014. Contacts For more information, please contact the Department of Human Resources.
