Flood Relief for Evacuated Communities

YELLOWKNIFE: The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) Social Justice Fund, in collaboration with the Union of Northern Workers (UNW), is allocating $60,000 to emergency relief to support the residents of the flooded communities of Fort Simpson and Jean Marie River.

As a longstanding charitable partner of the UNW, the United Way NWT will administer the funds to qualifying relief organizations to ensure residents affected by the flooding and damage will get the aid they need.

The Social Justice Fund was established by the PSAC in 2003 to promote and administer humanitarian relief, anti-poverty initiatives, international labour development, and worker education. As a national officer of the PSAC, UNW President Todd Parsons was one of the founding members and has sat on the steering committee since the beginning.

Many employers in the North contribute to the Social Justice Fund, including, but not limited to numerous smaller UNW employers such as the City of Yellowknife, the Village of Fort Simpson, Fort Simpson Housing, and the Town of Hay River.

“This is a time of upheaval for communities that are already feeling the weight of pandemic-fatigue,” said UNW President Todd Parsons. “The residents of the affected areas are top of mind right now as we work with PSAC and the United Way NWT to provide financial aid to the organizations on the ground who can best assist those in need.”

“We are pleased to partner with the UNW and PSAC.  We also know that there are countless volunteers, organizations, companies and individuals who are already mobilizing assistance to the area; this funding and any other funding raised through this initiative will go directly to qualifying organizations who are best positioned to support those in need right now,” said Tracy St. Denis, Chair United Way NWT.

“The UNW has always taken an active role in caring for our communities,” continued Parsons, “and we are always ready to provide whatever form of support we can to our members, their families, and our communities during times of crisis.”

If anyone would like to help support qualifying programs and groups offering relief, clothing, shelter and food to NWT residents affected by the flooding, you can do so at: www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/united-way-nwt/
